Upgraded to Comcast Gigabit from 200mbps plan, but generally getting slower speeds out of gigabit. I'm really confused.

If you got 914 on a test, you’ve got the hardware acceleration/cut-through turned on. Without it, on those puny routers (despite looking like a spaceship), you’d never reach gigabit speeds or even close to it.

I ninja edited my post.

Band steering is basically a hack, and quite often devices ignore it. Or it works for a while, and the second the 5Ghz signal drops a little (like you walk on the other side of the wall), the device kicks over to 2.4Ghz and never goes back.

The key is you don’t want your 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks to be named the same. Otherwise devices often prefer the “louder” signal, which 2.4Ghz is generally going to be.
