Upset/discouraged by Student Remark

One of the toughest things is to not take it personally. Do your best to be an objective scientist and think "what do students displaying this behavior need?"

I would have half of the class dawdling with cell phones while I was explaining how to do big data visualization, and then have those exact same students freak out when it was time to do big data visualization. Easy to hate them, harder to realize they need very explicit guidance about professional cell phone use, and serious grade penalties for pulling out a cell phone inappropriately. It would also be easy for me to call students stupid for being computer illiterate, but in reality it means I have to teach them how to find a file on a hard drive or where the "File->open" menu is. You have to teach the students you have or get a new job.

Hard to do, but basically think about what kind of writing is going to get this kid to love English. Boys are well known to abandon reading for pleasure in their early teens.
