Is it usual to get cut off by cars insanely often?

No.

In the past 8 years I’ve probably been actually cut off at most once or twice a year. I can’t actually recall the last time I had a moment where a car caused me to need to emergency brake. It’s happened I’m sure, I just don’t remember the particulars.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had to do plenty of preemptive braking based on idiots who were about to, or had the potential to, be idiots. But the key is to take premetive actions so you don’t have to bust out emergency reactions.

I always ride assertively and often I’m going pretty quick with agression. I rarely think about the speed limit, I mainly concern myself with how I can best use my speed to control my environment. I go slow when it’s the best choice to preserve my health, my wallet, or my freedom. I use speed (1000cc in-line 4 baby) when it is to my advantage to do so, such as moving through traffic and creating space and buffer zones.

If you ride timid and slow in the right lane like a limo, situations happen to you. If you are more assertive you can have a bit more control over how road situations unfold and they just don’t happen to you.

It will come with time. Don’t rush it.
