Valve announces paid modding for Skyrim - Content Patch Apr. 23rd, 2015

Hmm.. how about that deal 75% for the owner of the content.. For mods even, something that arguably is much more beneficial for popular games than Lets Play YouTube videos..

Compare that to Nintendo's YouTube creators program and suddenly they seem pretty reasonable only taking a 30% cut!

It's funny that Total Biscuit agrees the owners of the content that's deserve a cut (albeit not this high) and that doesn't think so when it comes to YouTube videos, which take much less effort than the development for a mod but are rewarded incomparably more for just the views they generate..

I guess it makes a difference when the user of the copyrighted content is already making money which they now have to share with the content owner compared to when the user of the copyrighted content wasn't making money in the first place and now can generate revenue that they have to share with the content owner.

It may feel different because of the situation they come from, but it's really the same thing looked at with double standards.

Arguably modders deserve the money more: they put more effort in their work, will have a bigger positive influence on the game since they can add to it's popularity and longevity, will make less revenue for the time they spend creating, etc. etc. Sharing the revenue made from the work with the content owner as a concept in itself is here regarded as "fair" provided the percentage is fair. Yet for Lets Play videos, which take less effort than mods, have a lesser influence on the games - especially already well known and popular ones, have an added negative influence on the game by showing everything to the public, make more money quicker, etc. etc. it is outrageous that Nintendo even dares to ask for a much smaller share for creators using their copyrighted content..

Talking about double standards and fairness.. -.-
