Vancouver police not using thin blue line patches as white supremacist symbol, chief says

Saw a border guard with one yesterday. How about no, how about enough of this.

There's an us-vs-them mentality that underlies this symbol, and it needs to be nipped in the bud.

Police are civil servants who deserve the same respect as someone emptying public trash bins or working as a paramedic or BC Hydro. A public service, and they act like unaccountable kings. Buzzing through red lights, looking at their personal cell phones in traffic while driving - special training my left foot.

They are peace officers, and we've allowed them to become crime fighters - LARPing superheroes, drunk on hubris.

Imagine carrying a gun around in public, try to get your head around that - you, and your crew, are the only ones with guns. It's impossible that this won't lead to abuses, and inevitable that this will foster a sense of elitism. A big fat head.

Nobody is conscripted into being a cop, so no, they shouldn't get to wear what amount to self-administered gang colours. A uniform and the privileges afforded them by the courts and the public generally must be sufficient - symbols have meaning, and this one portends something other than their mandate.
