Which is why I never understood the arguments about housing being too expensive. The market is simply finding equilibrium. The further from the core you go, the most it costs to get to the core, and that's how much less the houses are worth. Travel further and the jobs start to pay less and the housing is further reduced accordingly.

After all, if someone in a small town has $40,000 per year to spend and pays $700/month in rent, they have $31,600 for the rest of life's expenses. Therefore, someone with $100,000 in the big city core can spend $5,700 per month in rent and be no worse off (assuming all other costs are constant, which isn't entirely true, but close enough for a Reddit comment).
