Vegan/Vegetarian

This is, somehow, a relatively contentious issue among (online) Buddhists. The basic fact is that Buddhists shouldn’t be eating meat, or related animal products. This breaks down at the point of needing to eat it out of necessity, or if you’ve been given meat, or other such things. But in terms of typical day-to-day Buddhist practice, the consumption of meat/cheese/etc. should be avoided.

You’ll hear that “some Buddhists are not vegetarian”, as if that answers the question. Some Buddhists also lie, cheat, and steal. Some Buddhists habitually get drunk. This observation is beside the point. The point is that it would be better if they didn’t do these things.
