Very curious what the original TNG experience was like. Were you around then?

It was fairly controversial. Kind of funny now, seeing all of these old-school trekkies comparing DSC to TNG and complaining that it "isn't Star Trek"; that's exactly what old-school Trekkies were saying when TNG was announced. The more details were revealed, the more strident the disapproval was.

"Oh, the captain is a French guy? Played by a British actor? WTF?"

"They're putting an Android on the crew. The new Spock is an Android. How original."

And so on.

Not to make it sound like everyone hated it. Far from it. But there were some strong voices of disapproval. As the old saying goes, "Nobody hates Star Trek more than Star Trek fans."

A large part of this is just human nature. People hate it when something they love changes in any way, but for something to last as long as Star Trek has, it has to evolve to some degree.
