Victim blaming: Comparing the media and social media reaction to the Australian olympic team breaking curfew and the backlash against schools accused of victim blaming female students whose pics ended up on a pornography site

Victim blaming becomes a more heated topic as soon as there's anything sexual involved.

If I behave in a manner that increases the likelihood of my car being stolen (such as parking it somewhere that is well known for car theft, and then leaving it unlocked with the keys in the ignition), then when my car is stolen I'll probably be called a fool and any kind of "don't blame the victim why don't we teach car thieves not to steal" will be treated as stupid.

If I behave in a manner that increases the likelihood of me being raped... and I get raped... don't even think of mentioning any kind of culpability on my part. Once there's a sexual element, any suggestion that it might be a good idea take any sort of precautionary measures is just making excuses for the perpetrator. Calls of victim blaming seem to drown out some statements that just seem like good advice for anyone who'd like to reduce their odds of becoming a victim.

All leaves me a bit confused. I don't want victims of any crime, sexual or otherwise, to have their ordeal made worse by finger pointing after the fact. But I don't like how good precautionary advice often gets shouted down as both an attack on victims and an excuse for the criminal.
