Victims of communism memorial land worth at least $16M, Ottawa architect says

Justin Trudeau, leader of the federal Liberal Party

I am writing you today to congratulate the Tribute to Liberty on their continuing efforts to bring about a Canadian memorial to honour the victims of Communist regimes. Since the first Communist state was established in 1917, Canada has been a safe haven for countless refugees fleeing persecution and seeking a restoration of freedom, democracy and human rights. We, as Canadians, must never forget the pain and suffering entire generations endured under Communist rule, and it is important that we remember the lives of its untold victims. Memorialization is important, as it not only serves to heighten Canadians’ awareness about the lives of those who suffered under oppression, but reminds us of how lucky we are to live in a country that celebrates the virtues of peace and liberty. The Tribute of Liberty has come a long way in their efforts to create a permanent memorial dedicated to the victims of Communism and pays tribute to the many contributions Canada has made in coming to their aid. On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I stand with all those across the country, as we recognize the Tribute of Liberty’s tireless work to bring about public awareness to the suffering of millions.

Thomas Mulcair, leader of the federal NDP

Dear Friends: I am pleased to extend support to Tribute to Liberty as you realize your vision for a permanent memorial in Ottawa recognizing the victims of communism. Throughout human history, totalitarian regimes have wrought untold suffering on millions. This monument will recognize those who were silenced by tyranny and pay tribute to the incredible strength and determination of those who fought for change. It will also serve as an important reminder for all persons of conscience that it is our duty to prevent similar wrongdoings from being visited on others. Canada is renowned the world over for our openness and diversity. All Canadians can take pride in our tradition of welcoming refugees and being a beacon of hope for those who flee persecution. On behalf of Canada's New Democrats I wish you continued success with this worthwhile endeavour.

Sincerely, Hon. Thomas Mulcair, P.C., M.P. Leader of the Official Opposition, New Democratic Party of Canada OTTAWA

Elizabeth May, Leader of the federal Green Party

We can be proud, as Canadians, that we opposed totalitarian communism and have provided a land of refuge for so many of those who fled its terrors.
