Video game music that has lyrics - when did it start? How often does it occur?

It is known that the feeling you get in the game gets mixed up in our brain with the music :
If you played FF7, and you hear this song, I am sure it makes you feel desperation, loneliness, calm and uncertainty. Because of the story that you were involved while you played with this song in the background for hours. Someone who didn't play the game won't feel the same.

It can go the other way around, someone who hates a song that plays on loop for hours will mix up this hate to the game, even when the game itself is good.

Instrumental music are much neutral I think. You can forget them in the background. With lyrics, it's too obvious to notice change in pace, tune, and notice the loop playing again.

I've been trying to play through Final Fantasy 13-2, the game is good, the story's mechanics are good too, but the music is sometimes atrocious. It has lyrics and cannot be turned off in the setting, even on the pc version. The singer might have a nice voice, but it's screaming in your ears during exploration. And there is a ton of exploration. it's driving me insane

I know it's a matter of taste. That's exactly why devs shouldn't alienate 50% of it's player base choosing a song that only 20% will enjoy, 30% won't care.
They will associate the not-liking of the song to their feel about the game, and they shouldn't do it. Or at least let us turn it off in settings
