Views on Police and Police Reform

Police and prisons aren’t as necessary as people here want to make it out. Not entirely unnecessary, but before Reaganism, when drug arrests went up exponentially while drug addiction rates stayed unchanged, there were serious conversations about ending prisons. It wasn’t necessary, but then incarceration got turned into a business.

There are multiple paths we can take but we have to do so much to fix criminal injustice in this country it’s incredibly overwhelming. Like, we have lost several of what were once constitutional rights to this war on drugs. Police power is almost entirely unchecked, in fact often what we consider bad behavior is rewarded.

One of the best books I’ve ever read was “The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander. It goes very in depth on the system of incarceration and some of the things I mentioned in this comment, and a lot more.
