Villains who aren’t anywhere near as compelling as their creators seem to think they are

A while back someone on here recommened the "Gauntlet" run of amazing spider man. It had been ages since I'd actually sat down and read a comic, so I decided to give it a whirl.

That run has some fantastic moments (Electro, Rhino, fucking Juggernaut), and the whole time we're given hints that the Kravens are somehow pulling the strings behind the scenes, throwing trial after trial at Spidey to wear him down. You're left wondering what on earth they have planned, what elaborate final trap they'll spring once Pete can't take any more?

The masterstroke is to fight him in a big house. And then a graveyard. And to finish with a good old "it doesn't matter how evil they are, killing them makes YOU the villain". The family goes from feeling like a group of impossibly cunning masterminds to a group of deranged knife-weilding cavemen.
