Nah. I just think it’s the snowball effect. The more downvoted or upvoted something is, the more likely people will vote the same way without really reading the comment. Me asking for anyone to explain why they were downvoting just made it worse (“Ha! How dare you ask! You really deserve another downvote now!”).

I think what got it started was a combination of Trump supporters who read my comment and didn’t like it and people not really reading my comment thinking I was a Trump supporter because I responded to the highly voted OP (with essentially an add-on detail to explain why ethno-nationalism probably isn’t the most accurate term to use here) and my comment was already downvoted enough to be auto-collapsed.
