Virtually all of the “tough guys” you see on TV and movies were theater majors in college.

Damnit. Like Al said, "just when I thought I was out..." but ok, I'll address what you said. Do you want to know the truth? My own father was a tough guy character actor during the late 70s. He had served in Nam and was a true badass, through and through. But on set? He was taunted mercilessly. "Hey Julliard! Make sure that gun's pointed the right way huh?" or "Why don't you ask your best friend Lee Strasberg?" and on and on. He was always seen as a "fake" tough guy actor and never really recognized for the real content of his character. It drove him to drink and tore our family apart. So, maybe you can understand now why I get a little testy when people start throwing out these kinds of claims.
