A visual guide to American pizza

Chicagoan here. Our pizza is definitely an acquired taste, and there are many arguments over who does it best. You can't really eat it with your hands, nor can you ever fold it. It's not a food you can really take to go, and you certainly can't eat it regularly (and hope to live a long, healthy life).

But what Chicago style pizza lacks in finesse and style, it makes up for in big, bold flavors and textures that you have to try at least once. A buttery flakey crust that's been properly made will have you wondering which end to start your piece from. The rich, chunky sauce that's piled on each pizza beats even the best gravy I've have had in NJ. It will give you terrible heartburn, but it's worth it. The giant slab of sausage spread over the pizza is probably not something typical, but it works so well, you'll never want those pitiful sausage balls thrown on a pizza again. And the cheese that's piled on is so melty and perfect that you'll never forget the first piece you serve out of the pan, with all of the cheese stretching out of the sides over the spatula.

Putting all of those pieces together makes for a transcendental bite of pizza, one that will transport you to your own slice of heaven.

Don't misinterpret what I'm saying - New York and New Jersey pizza is amazing as well, but absolutely in a different way. And while you can argue over which place has the best overall, the way I see it is...New York and New Jersey are the Mecca of pizza - you have to go at least once in your lifetime to experience the beauty that is a perfect slice of pizza from the best eateries there. But where that's Mecca, Chicago is the Jerusalem of pizza - the holy land. And the perfect slice of Chicago style pizza will bring you closer to God. (No really, it could kill you. No joke about that.)
