I have vitiligo...

You're physical characteristics are a part of who you are. I understand what you're trying to say in consolation, but ignoring it is unhealthy. Better to accept it fully and completely.

You see the problem isn't Vitiligo it's your reaction to having Vitiligo. That is his inhibition does not stem from Vitiligo, nor from how others react to Vitiligo, but stems from what he thinks about Vitiligo, and what he think others think about his condition. So it's essentially multiple abstractions away from reality. The thought there is then enemy, it is at the root of insecurity. Not the condition, and not the opinions of others.

On daily basis we do things that other people opine as "wrong", or "distasteful", but more often than not opinions of others are not only wrong, but inconsequential, and most probably feeble. You would surprised that while most people have opinions on things, those opinions aren't really that well grounded, and if they are they are inconsequential to you.

That is if a person is unwilling to talk to you because of a condition you have no control over, you're better off not talking to that person in the first place. Obviously this has implication if we're talking about employment, or sales, or what have you, but that's a different struggle.

The daily struggle of just walking outside, and talking to people should be something that you do with little inhibition, other than the social ones of decent, normal etiquette; the things directly in your control. Why bother worrying about things that aren't in your control, life is complicated already, better to not worry about things that are outside of one's control.

I've seen many people in India with the condition have families, run businesses, and do daily normal tasks with little social consequence.

For me personally I do make a mental note, just as I would make note of any other person's skin color, whether they're dark, light, black, white, or with a skin condition like yours, but I don't think it has any other effect on my interaction with that person, beyond just the simple mental note that is natural to all humans.
