The Wage Gap Myth that won't die: You have to ignore many variables to think women are paid less than men.

how can two equal resumes produce 30% more callbacks when the only difference is a name.

I've heard this story of changing a name and that changing the results of a callback or an offer.

I'm not exactly sure what that's supposed to show though. Something that businesses are probably seeking to avoid is time-off for pregnancy, and men are far less likely to take time off. If you had identical resumes you might pick the man just so that you have one less thing to worry about.

I bet ugly people get fewer call backs too, if their photo is used.

People with poor grammar get passed over, even if grammar has nothing to do with the job. There are countless reasons someone doesn't get a job.

I was hired once because I had a white sounding name. My boss was a black guy. It was a debt collection company and my boss wanted a mix of different voices of people to work the phones. I was turned down for a job working with children because I am a man. It was for an English program in Korea. Employers want different things because customers want different things. Parents don't want men near their young children. Debtors, sometimes, would rather pay a white-sounding person than a black-sounding person.

I bet that it's actually customers that are prejudiced and not employers. People who hire are responding to that through their hiring practices. Some of that information is conveyed through the name.

I bet you have a different ideas about Ndaba vs Samantha.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't try to fix these things as a society. I just think that there are many forces working and some of them are racism/sexism and some of them are something else.
