Having worked in a former life as an FRO, it is hammered into your head, that if you don't make it to the scene, not only are you no good to the caller, you are now creating your own call, and drawing already limited resource to the response you've now created.

Chocking toddler, nursing home full of WW2 veterans on fire, Klan members using RPGs to rob a bank, it doesn't matter what you are responding to if you are endangering the public and yourself during the response.

Hell, in my state, even if you are driving an ambulance with the Governor in the back bleeding to death, there are two laws you are still forbidden to break during your response: You can't speed through a school zone, and you can't pass a stopped school bus that is loading or unloading. Care to venture a guess why these two particular laws exist? Hint, someone in an emergency vehicle killed a child responding to (IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THEY WERE RESPONDING TO).
