Ancient player here. Basically, everything you do will benefit you musically. Most of this is the mental game. My advice would be to listen to tons of music of all kinds. When you hear things you like, learn that thing enough that you have something you can keep from it. Don't limit yourself to guitar... Learning an instrument is also learning about the space it takes up, and that means being conscious of other players. Jam with people lots...2 hours in a room hacking out stuff in real time is worth a month in your bedroom alone. Be open minded (you sound like you are), try to avoid getting into camps of beliefs... Everyone is great and as something new to the world. Leave time to get stupid. Be crazy, anything goes. Music is wild, have fun!
