A warning about the difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism

I see so many "sober for 7 days - my life is now amazing" posts. It's not really representative of how I felt.

I second this. It's great that people held out for a week, but abstaining from alcohol for 7 days is not a measure of progress. It's an accomplishment, for sure, but you're the same person at one week that you were 8 days ago. While you can find meaning in that accomplishment and some of the small things that go along with it, that doesn't meant that meaningful change has occurred. There's so much further to go.

It's the same thing with the "I'm three days sober, and I went to the same pool hall I go to every Friday night, only this time I didn't drink!!" posts. Great, have a cookie, I guess. I didn't go near a bar for the first year or so - because I finally realized that in order to quit, drastic change was required, and that meant prioritizing sobriety by avoiding temptation and situations that would tempt me to drink. Sobriety first, everything else comes after that.
