It depends on the anime and dub quality. With action anime, I tend to prefer dubs if it’s well done because I want to get into it and shout alongside them.

If it’s a character driven thing with a lot of emotions, then subs because generally dubs don’t tend to capture the same level of emotion or might break immersion if the mouths aren’t synced up.

If I’m with other people watching anime, dubs all the way. We’ll be talking, making fun of it, or just generally screwing around so japanese as a background noise to that is meh.

I’d also rather not have to read it out loud to them as I end up being the one assigned that duty since it’s too fast or they can’t concentrate on both at once. They’re the type to miss ... everything if they’d have to read at the same time.
