So I watched Destiny debate a real academic and...

People like Destiny and Vaush actually got me back into philosophy after finishing undergrad. Watching their debates made me start thinking about how discourse has its own sort of ethical system that these online debates frequently ignore. Both of these guys are quick to accuse someone of “bad faith”, a phrase that I get so tired of hearing it makes me gag, but they’re both prone to looking for chances to make snippy remarks or to hyperbolize their opponent’s position to make them sound even worse than they already do (See Vaush calling almost everyone a Nazi). These formats don’t really leave a lot of space for nuance, so it ends up just being vapid arguing. To have someone like Wolff try to give nuanced answers is just too boring for the debate bro types.

What really upsets me is when these people start learning a little philosophy and spamming philosophical terms to make themselves look smart. Vaush’s “consequentialism”, Destiny’s ethical egoism, and basically everything Rem says comes to mind (though he’s gotten better recently).
