Watching streams isn't as effective as described, at least in lower ranks.

Yup, in our ranks you can't expect every pro tip to apply b/c everyone is more run n' gun than taking time to think stuff out. I started out in Nova 1 after taking a good break for Overwatch and DotA2 but I'm back to GNM now after a few good runs of Mirage, Cache and Inferno only.

I have little 'mini' strats I like to setup/run for myself that I picked up from watching pro matches.

For example, holding B mirage. I took a page from MSL's B hold. Start by throwing a smoke deep into apts, ideally it goes past the doorway in halls. Jump onto plat or van area and spam a few shots or wait to see if someone pushes smokes. As it dissipates, throw a molly or nade into the kitchen area then self flash and push. I've had pretty good success with this.

Another I picked up from fREAK on his Road to Global. Cache, taking B site. Smoke off the crossing into checkers and fight for the position if contested. Molly heaven, flash off the wall in B main into your smoke(should still be up) and push from checker into B under heaven. This works pretty well for me also.

In the end though, it will mostly come down to who can win the most man fights to push their team over the edge. For this, you can only grind DM.
