And I think the way the action was shot was purposeful--the action is cool, like the action in comic movies, but he took the time to actually show the brutality of the things they were doing--they're skipping around and laughing all while breaking bones, maiming, and just brutally beating people--it kind of shows how fucked up it actually is in a lot of ways.
I think it was purposely done like that--most of the action scenes, for me, would always have two reactions, "awesome" followed by "jesus..."
Which is how the originals were with regards to comics at the time.
