When I was doing ISP Engineering, I used to manage fiber installation in commercial properties (Office buildings, strip malls, etc...)

1) My entire job was to do walkouts to determine pathway & create a plan. Since this was fiber installation it was more figuring out how to get from the feeder Utility Riser Pole or Manhole into the property. But since this is New England, a lot of Commercial properties are in old houses & other non-traditional commercial properties (especially old mills). I would create an installation plan after walking out the interior of the building to give to the installers. I would come up with the plan of where to run cables, where to cut holes, where to break in etc.. & review it with the building owner.

2) Make sure you have some sort of home repair company on retainer. You will mess up and break some shit that you can't fix, so it's important to have someone on call to come fix it.

3) Basic stuff like drywall fixing/cutting is an experience game: The more you do, the better you are. It's definitely not unreasonable to learn on your own, and just good to know as a home owner (or eventual home owner)
