Water monitor in need of a good home. MD.

Yes we do my friend! By the way, I just want to tell you that your juvenile V. melinus is beautiful. I must say that you surpassed everyone's expectations of what a first time monitor owner, never mind a first time reptile owner, was able to accomplish.

You've done a great job, and I just want you to know that (I'm sure you're already well aware of it, but it's always good to hear encouragement from others) you've already become a great and valuable addition to the Varanid community.

On a separate note - Do you happen to keep detailed logs about your Pazuzu? I've just started a more formal daily log for all of my animals (in comparison to how I did it before - random notes in a notebook). I'm also experimenting with using my server to control my heating and humidity through automation (similar to yours, but with some differences). However, I'm strictly following daily weather on Timor (V. timorensis). Have you considered doing this for your V. melinus? I've only been doing it for a couple of weeks but having the humidity, lighting (to account for cloudy days, or full sun days), temperatures, and even simulated rainfall seems to have added an enormous amount of stimulation for them. I just want to hear your take on this, and weather you do anything similar.

One more thing - I already do this with my insular boa constrictors and they have a very positive reaction to this. I've noticed more activity, more exploration, and increased feeding responses. I also drag their food throughout the enclosure to create a sent trail, and then hide the prey somewhere. Without fail they end up "hunting/stalking" their prey. This was an idea I got from Frank Indiviglio, who was in charge of the reptiles and amphibians at the Bronx zoo for many years. They've used it as an enrichment activity for decades.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on some of these issues.
