Wealthy homeowners received millions in public money under Government scheme to help first-time buyers

Sorry, but this is somewhat hyperbole. The article insinuates that £280M has left the coffers of the people. It doesn’t work like that. The help to buy scheme works as a guarantor against the deposit of the mortgage.

We weren’t a £100k household (£55k at the time), we cut back on all non-essentials and saved everything we could, liquidated gadgets and gizmos and got the 5% deposit (and money for all the legal fees and moving costs) together, and help to buy got us on the ladder. The mortgage was expensive as fuck to begin with but we were just glad to have our home, small as it may be. We’ve now done our first mortgage switch which has reduced the monthlies and we’re now “out” of the help to buy.

We didn’t have the luxury of the bank of mummy and daddy, HTB was a really big help. Whilst the article points towards £100k households; rent and living costs can be so extortionate. You’re a fucking moron if you think that a £100k earning couple would take a shitty and expensive HTB mortgage deal if they didn’t have to.
