Web Designer designing a new path (26M)

Unfortunately I live in a country (South Africa) where the only way to get ahead is to OWN an electrical company, which you can't do without a Wireman's License (which is what studying Electrical Engineering grants you) as far as I know. Trades workers are treated particularly badly here, it's not a respectable, legitimate career path like in Australia for example. I'm not especially interested in electrical/electronics, like one of those kids who tinkered with circuits as a kid, but I like the idea of a skilled trade.

Another option is working freelance from home, which means I don't have to be tied down to my desk 9-5 every day. I am still pretty passionate about design in general - it's what I always wanted to do and did in school until I entered the industry and was treated like shit. I know it's common for people to leave and go freelance for their sanity and quality of life. The pick of companies to work for in my city is dismal, so working freelance for clients local and international would be great.
