Web designers of Reddit, how do you handle situations where your higher up tells you to implement a bad design? Or you implement a standard web design trick but the higher up thinks it's a design error and jokingly blames your lack of competence for it?

I would really like to know this too. I've been working really hard on my delivery ("Looks great. What if we try ____ because ____?"), but the person designing our site (I'm the developer) is super sensitive about his designs. He's never designed a site before and has no training, but acts like his first drafts can't possibly be improved upon. It took over a week of arguing until he finally agreed to create\ wireframes before building out each page. The site was still fully wireframed before content was ev\en discussed. There are so many unorthodox design choices that seem to have been 'invented' or half-assed copied from sites from completely different industries, but if I try to sway him to something that's commonly used, I'm labeled "difficult to work with". I was shut down for suggesting we look at our competitors' sites to get some ideas. It took a few weeks and a couple unscheduled meetings with my boss, telling me to be a better team player (he's pretty good friends with this other guy, who tattles on me if we ever have a disagreement), but I've decided that if he's in charge of design, let him design. If the site looks like ass, it's not my fault... I built it to spec. If I'm going to get fired, it would be because I'm "not a team player", not because I didn't do a better job of tutoring our wannabe web designer. My boss and our CEO knows who is designing the site, so I shouldn't burden myself with someone else's responsibility.I suppose it depends on your relationship with the person handing the design decisions to you. In my case, I can't give suggestions for changes without the drama, so I've learned to let go. He won't listen, it will turn into an argument, which is only going to put my job in jeopardy. After a few projects of crappy-looking sites, he'll either be taken off design duty or might learn that he doesn't have all the answers and open up to suggestions. I've got nothing to gain by butting heads with him.Right now, I'm focused on:

  1. keep cashing paychecks

  2. find a better job if they continue to ignore my advice in the future.
