Weekday Free-for-All Discussion Thread | August 10, 2015

And yeah, I actually found this sub thru reading your comments on ABCDesis because I liked them so much. I am quite liberal, but kinda offputting to get that label from the start.

Wow, cool to hear that. We've actually talked before (I'm the one who posted those Pehalwani photos in that retro thread a few accounts ago).

while Sikhi does advocate what can be constructed as masculinity in some ways (keeping your head huh, not giving an inch, fighting back, being your own king), it also doesn't do so in the way this sub may want (sexually) and also emphasizes humility and gentleness. I am a pretty passionate Sikh but it doesn't play into my role here so much.

Damn, I've said pretty much the exact same think in this sub before, in a thread about our definitions of masculinity. I'm not religious, but I love all the ethics of Sikhism (self defense, justice, protecting the weak, anti-materialist, egalitarian etc.) other than the sexual conservatism. I love masculine Punjabi shit like motorbikes, bodybuilding, drinking and bhangra too.

Regarding India, I'm not a Khalistani, I'm all for united India. However I despise the institution of Hindutva and the chest-banging Indian nationalism that goes with it that commodifies and simplifies the politics in the subcontinent (just like colonialism). How Nehru treated Punjab reflects his colonial upbringing. India is a composite of unique states with their own unique cultures. I can appreciate people who are overwhelmingly proud of their distinct culture (Tamils for example as a group generally) but hate how so many other people try to blend all of South Asia to be the same.

Yeah, I agree. I like the nationalists who celebrate India's rich diversity, not the ones who believe Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism are really just part of Hinduism. Then again, I'm with them when it comes to Christian missionaries, Wahhabism and the like. I think we can have separate identities at a state level and still feel strong unity as a nation. I ride hardest for Punjab, but I still ride for India, you know?

Main reason I'm here is my Punjabi background. Some parts of the masculinity is fucked up (Sucha Soorma for example, Surrey Jacks), but it's a part of who I am I guess and I try to learn about it. People say it's only the Jatts, but all of Punjab has a super martial culture, from Mazhbis to Rajputs to Gujars to Khatris to Mohyal Brahmins to so on. I'm hoping this can be a space that I csn discuss that to an extent.

I think we should discuss this part more (especially Surrey Jacks), but maybe another time since it'll get pretty deep and I've gotta go to sleep soon.

Also, I really like how this sub is concerned with pointing out the countless hypocrisies white supremacist racial structure levy onto POC (the white man being "just right" for example).

Same. That and figuring out how to get more Asians in media (here in the UK South Asians are 7% of the population, but we're hardly ever shown on TV). You should check out all of Disciple888's threads linked here and here. He's known as this sub's Jesus, and for good reason.

Haha, my username was just the first thing that popped into my head. I'm not a Khalistani or anything.
