Weekly Advice Thread (02/03-02/09)

a pro Trump user of what? some incel subreddit? can I ask why?

they say a lot of weird and appalling stuff as a kind of performative signaling to other members of the in-group: saying things that ‘normal’ society finds abhorrent shows that they belong in the outcast tribe. My suspicion is that the actual content of the discussions is much less important than the social function of the discussion — the group bonds that it maintains. I wish I knew whether they actually believe the crazy-ass things that they say (this is what intrigues me about them). who knows?

nobody’s ever “beyond saving.” what would that even mean? every human being can choose to act with a good will; this is existential and ineradicable. as for whether you (or any of us) can help them, I am doubtful, unfortunately. they stand to lose a lot more by leaving the group than they stand to gain by talking to us. the human need for social belonging is very strong. they talk about sexual relationships as a sacred need, but I think it is the social need that keeps them loyal to the incel community.

just my opinion
