Weekly 'Ask Anything About Analog Photography' - Week 03

before I start, sorry for my english. I sometimes cant find the right words.

Hey guys! I started (film) photography about two and a half months ago and I love it. I never felt so good in my 19 years of living. I started because I wanted to create dark and almost scary shots (foggy morning in the woods for example). But now I noticed its not really what I want to get out of photography. Landscapes are awesome but I am searching for something more "personal". I would love to take portraits. I got inspired by ryan muirhead (http://ryanmuirhead.com/) and Jan Scholz (http://www.micmojo.com/). I dont want to copy their work, I just got inspired by their work. Now I have some difficulties starting out and thought maybe some people can give me some advice.

I own a Nikon FM2n and a Sekonic L308s lightmeter. When I meter indoors both lightmeters give me readings far under what I can shoot handheld (50mm/ f1.8 / 1/15 / ISO 400). So I am not sure how I can meter indoors. I shot a test roll (self timer + me) and got "OK" results but those results wont fit other locations or shooting conditions. I dont want to shoot f1.8 all the time because sometimes I can use the backround in my composition.

I want to give an example so you have an idea what I am talking about. Here is a picture from Ryan Muirhead. He is known to shoot without flash or artificial light (most of the time). Sure, he is a professional with years of expierence but I am not talking about his composition or model. I just want to ask how I can meter a situation like that. Is it just expierience and skill? Pushed film (800, 1600)?
