Weekly CAREERS Mega-Thread [May 14 2018]

Just because nepotism is out the window doesn't mean plain ol' networking is out the window. Thursday I interviewed a guy and made him an offer of sorts ("I don't want to push the paperwork to HR unless you're truly interested. Think about it over the weekend, then shoot me an email on Monday. If you say 'yes,' I'll push the paperwork."). How did I get his resume? It was forwarded to me by an old Army buddy of his...One who happens to work for me in a "grunt" level capacity.

The point being that you don't have to have high ranking friends/family. Just knowing someone who knows someone can be enough.

Beyond that, if you've applied for 200 jobs and not heard anything back then your resume isn't really good. Sorry, it just isn't. Whether it's a problem with the resume itself or you're applying for jobs that your resume doesn't actually fit, I have no idea. But something isn't right... And on that front, have you written 200 different resumes? 'Cause if you've applied for 200 jobs, you should have! Seriously. Every resume you submit should be customized for the job you're applying for. Sure, many of them may look an awful lot a like, and they may all tell the same basic story, but if you aren't reviewing/editing/customizing your resume for every job you apply for you're doing it wrong. With that slow you down? Yup. You probably won't be able to apply for as many jobs doing this, but you'll also likely do much better.
