Weekly CAREERS Mega-Thread [Sep 17 2018]

I've been at the same company for the past 30 months (power & energy consulting) and am significantly struggling to transition away into building engineering (mechanical HVAC consulting). During this time I've been away from my fiancee only able to see her on weekends and my work is becoming more and more strenuous. Work trips are lasting longer (multiple ~3 week trips for some). Since this is my first job after my Master's I feel like employers see me as overqualified for a junior position but not qualified enough for intermediate roles. My work isn't directly relatable, but there's a good amount of overlap that I wouldn't be totally green.

I have continually reached out to the firm's near my fiancee, and have been met with comments that they aren't currently hiring. I'm debating reaching out directly to some of the leading principal engineers of these firms to introduce myself and connect on LinkedIn but I'm worried this might come off as nagging & ruin any potential chances. For reference, I previously sent out my resume & cover letter for general consideration of new opportunities about 3 months ago. This is in Ontario, looking to go towards SW Ontario.
