Weekly Discussion - April 22, 2017

I was able to catch the sub of Kimi no Na Wa last week, so here is my spoiler-free reflection on sub vs. dub, as requested by u/OnlyTryingToDrownHer (this is not meant to convince anyone to like or watch the movie if it’s not your thing):

If you can only see it on the big screen once, and are not adamantly sub-only, I would suggest watching the dub. There, I said it. This is an incredibly beautiful movie, as anyone who’s watched another Shinkai creation would expect, and you probably don’t want to be constantly looking at the bottom of the screen. I was expecting to get the sub the first time I went to the cinema, and was a little shocked when I heard English instead of Japanese, but the movie was still a solid 9/10 for me. I’m pretty picky about dubs myself, but I was generally pleased with this one. I have only the tiniest of nitpicks, namely Taki sounding a tad old for a teenager (but let’s be honest, this is true of pretty much any high school boy in anime) and Mitsuha’s voice getting a bit squeaky in one or two scenes. Nothing that ruined the movie, and the supporting cast was actually great. I don’t know if the Radwimps songs are in English for other countries, but even that was okay in my opinion.

That said, if you can also watch the sub then please do so! The movie was carefully crafted and I’m convinced that the Japanese seiyuu put their all into getting Shinkai’s vision across. I was super impressed by Kamishiraishi Mone as Mitsuha, since she hasn’t done much voice work. She sounded very natural and consistent in her performance. I would say it felt a little more like Kamiki Ryuunosuke was acting, but the variation in his voice is definitely within the range of an adolescent boy. Ohara Sayaka has a role, which is always a plus for me :3 If you don’t understand Japanese then the songs work even better as background music (the lyrics are subtitled for those who are curious). Sub is 9.5/10 for me!

Alright. Aside from that, I spent the last two weeks watching Haikyuu, so prepare yourself for random thoughts with no pictures, or jump down to the bottom for my S2/S3 dream team:

Season 1

Season 2”)

Season 3 set – are all the games going to be that long from here on out? Poor children, though it looks like the entire school’s support got Karasuno to bounce back pretty quick. I have to comment on Ukai’s voice in the last couple episodes – it kind of made his scenes very distracting even though I was aware a change was coming :’( I can’t help wishing someone like Nakai Kazuya could take over if/when S4 comes. But to end on a positive note, congratulations to Kageyama for being invited to the national training camp!”)
