Weekly Lorde Song Battle #2: ROUND 1 - All Apologies VS Easy

Oh shit did I miss it? Don't go yet, I still have stuff to say!

All Apologies

I think I like this cover more for the fact of what it is than how it sounds. She went from a teenage girl to taking Kurt Cobain's spot in Nirvana in what, 6 months? I wouldn't really consider myself a fan of Nirvana, but I understand what a legend Kurt is and how many people he touched with his music. The fact that Dave chose her to sing for him at their R&R HOF induction... well what have you done today?

When it comes to the actual song itself I don't have that much of an opinion on it because, as I stated earlier, I'm not really a Nirvana fan and hadn't heard All Apologies until she covered it. I mean I still enjoyed it but I don't feel like I'm a big enough Nirvana fan to judge if she pulled it off. Her voice fit, but it always fits because she's fucking Lorde and anything she does I'll love because I have a problem.

And my god, the comments on that video.

Easy

Of these two songs, I feel like Easy suits her style more. It's definitely different than the sound she had on Pure Heroine, but I feel the overall tone of the song fits her voice and style better than All Apologies. Like All Apologies, I hadn't heard of Easy before she covered it, and until 30 seconds ago I hadn't heard the original. Now that I have heard the original, I can say I like her version more (huge shocker inorite). The original just felt a little too bare; the drums are my favorite part of her cover, and having them mostly gone in the original just makes the song sound empty. I'm sure that's what Son Lux was going for, the song does have kind of a creepy, empty vibe, but that's usually not the vibe I look for in music. I do love her voice in this cover though, it really fits the tone of the song. Whoever produced this track did a good job mixing her voice; it has this almost otherworldly vibe that fits the instrumentals of the song. I know she didn't write this song, but it just feels like her song. She really made this cover her own, and that's probably why I like it more than All Apologies. I can definitely feel her presence all throughout this track, but All Apologies doesn't really have her presence except for her vocals (which makes sense given the context of the performance but roll with me I'm trying to make a point here).

Gotta give this one to Easy. Vote up, flair up, feels good to be back.
