Weekly Miata DIY Thread - April 06, 2020

I literally just got a 93 miata in a private sale, and there are some things i would like to change about the interior:

Everything.

But seriously, its black. All black. And i live in florida, and have the top down frequently. I want to change it to tan, little by little.

Dash - My dash is old, cracking, and has a high pile fuzzy black dash mat on it. The only thing i want to change as badly as the dash is the carpet. I have searched, and dashes arent exactly the easiest to come by. And it looks like even the tan interiors had a black upper part of the dash.

  • What resources should I look for to change the dash to something not black? Or at least a nicer looking upper dash.
  • Is plastidip something viable? (Worried about sun exposure)
  • Any good place to find dash mods overall?

Carpet - Go easy on me here, this is my first Miata and I was not an enthusiast before finding and buying this car. What is this pile? I have gathered the high pile is for noise dampening, is this correct? Insulation maybe? The black soaks in the heat and it feels like the pile traps it all in the fibers.

  • What are the best sources for quality tan carpet? What should I look for?
  • Are there other solutions to dampening/insulation that does not involve high pile carpeting? I have looked at DIY carpet installs where added insulation and dampening products are used under the carpet.
  • I see the premium carpets seem to be this drop loop material. Is it possible I have a cheap aftermarket carpet install and am just not acquainted with the possibilities of a carpet pile that is not atrocious?

Speakers - Whats the best way to mount speakers in this car? And given the car’s compact and lighter weight design, how does this impact the type and placement of a subwoofer? (Also accounting for a smaller trunk)

Roof - Glass or plastic? I keep the roof down most of the time.

I am refraining from sparking a cloth vs vinyl debate.

Sorry if these questions are too noobish. My car is in the shop rebuilding the transmission and other under the hood issues and I’m trying to fix whats going on under the roof next.

Also side note about heat solutions: I will be tinting the windows eventually, but those stay down with the roof.
