Weekly Newbie Thread - Post questions about joining the AF or what a job is like here & here only - week of August 22

Due to a former Reckless Driving charge (Misdemeanor offense) I am required to procure a waiver in order to qualify for enlistment in any branch of the US military.

Roughly two weeks ago I spoke to my nearest (USAF) recruiter, who went through the prerequisite enlistment questions with me (Do you have asthma, traffic violations etc.) and discussed an interest in several occupations within the Air Force. He informed me, as I expected, that I "do not qualify for military service" and that I would need a waiver to join. He then informed me of the additional aptitude tests which may be required for a few of the job fields which seemed appealing to me (Broadcast Journalism, Computer Science) but stated that I could still qualify for said occupations in spite of being a waivered recruit.

After taking some time to gather the requisite paperwork, I contacted him once again. Without any recollection of our previous conversation, he then went on to state that I would not be offered the opportunity for a waiver from the US Air Force unless my intention was to enlist within the field of Special Operations. There was no mention of this caveat whatsoever in our previous conversation.

Am I to believe that this is a standard set by the US Air Force, or by an individual/recruiting station?
