Weekly Q&A Thread [02/15/2016]

Need radio recommendations.

I want to get into amateur radio. I have an immediate need for some two-way radios for an upcoming cruise. I want to give my son the illusion of some freedom, a couple of higher powered GMRS radios should fit the bill. I would hate to spend $60 or so to get GMRS radios then turn around and spend more $$ to get a "real" two-way. I figure I can buy a cheap UHF or dual-band radio, limit it to GMRS frequencies for now, and go from there.

Here's the features I'd like:

Dual VHF and UHF. Should be able to easily use MURS, marine VHF, amateur UHF, and GMRS frequencies. Discrete (not sure how to word it...I don't want anyone to see it and think I'm an off-duty cop or security). USB charging a big plus (even if the cable itself is non-standard on the battery end, i.e. a barrel connector). Should be easy to lock down (so I can hand it to a newbie and not worry about them "accidentally" changing to the wrong frequency). Last a full day of light usage (say, 18 hours standby time with a few minutes spent transmitting). 4+ watts of power.

Contenders:

Baofeng UV-B6. Not completely discrete, but close. No alarm, another plus. Requires charging stand. 4watts VHF, 3watts UHF.

Baofeng BF-888S. Only 2watt, UHF, has charging stand. On the plus side, it's definitely discrete (put on a stubby antenna and it looks like a well-built child's toy). Can disable the alarm. Cheaper than dirt. Would be good to give to the kids (after locking down to GMRS frequencies).

Baofeng UV-3R Mark II Plus. I know, it's either Mark II or Plus...I'm just hoping there's a yet unnamed upgrade that lets you easily disable the alarm. Otherwise this sounds pretty good. 2watt is a bit of a bummer, but it's fairly discrete (keypad says professional, size says it's a toy). VHF and UHF. USB charger (the cable itself is proprietary, but I can use my existing multi-usb charger).

Anytone ANILE-8R. 4+ watts. UHF only. Charging stand. Discrete. Harder to find.

Antenna recommendations welcome as well. Preferred size would be stubby (can fit in pocket) and ~7 inches (can fit in small bag).

TL;DR: Getting into hobby, want good budget radios for myself and simpler ones for kids. Leaning toward Baofeng UV-B6 for self and BF-888S or UV-3R for kids.

Thoughts?
