Weekly Raiding Q & A

I'm just going to analyse wipe 11, but keeping track of your performance across all the things I mention is generally good to do.

For Lightauros:

  • You cast Holy Prism 13 times. On a 7:20 fight, you want to cast it approximately 23 times. It does a crazy amount of healing - a single cast can dump half a million total healing into a raid. Also, sometimes you cast it on friendlies! You basically never ever ever want to do that. Instead of doing 500k+ healing, that does like 50k. I have my Holy Prism macro'd with /cast [harm] Holy Prism so that I can only cast it on enemies.
  • Your Holy Shock count is also a bit low. You want to be casting it on cooldown, and with 0 haste that would be 73 casts (excluding procs) in a 7:20 fight, but you only cast it 63 times.
  • Your armory doesn't have the 4pc bonus, yet you cast Light of Dawn. Basically, if you have the Eternal Flame talent, the only time you want to cast LoD is when the set bonus procs.
  • You missed one usage of your Candle - it was off cooldown from 4:57 until 6:35. That's 10k extra mana you could have had. You need to set up a Weakaura or something that yells at you to use the candle.
  • You were casting Denounces during some of the grasping hand phases. This can be ok if you have a druid casting tranq or something, but otherwise you really need to be healing. You need to just trust your DPS to break you out. I usually go find one of the dps warriors and jump in the hand next to them - they can knock you out of your hand virtually instantly! I do usually cast my Holy Prism on the hand I'm in, though.
  • One of your Holy Radiance casts hit just yourself and Gloria. That basically meant your Holy Radiance was an extremely expensive Flash of Light. Generally, I only ever cast Holy Radiance on one of the melee unless I know for sure that someone else is in a tightly stacked group.

Much of what I said applies to Gloria, so I won't repeat anything there. Additionally, though: * Gloria wasted 24 Holy Power over the course of the fight! That's insane. That's 8 missed Eternal Flames. You never want to waste holy power. Once I get to 3 Holy Power, I start looking for good Eternal Flame targets, and if I'm at 4 or 5 HP, I'm trying to cast an Eternal Flame as soon as humanly possible. * They cast their first Wings at the 1:32 mark. Sometimes it's ok to delay your Wings for a high-damage part of the fight, but obviously you should never wait more than 90 seconds. For most fights, I just cast Wings basically as soon as it comes off cooldown. On Kromog, I wait for him to cast his first breath or slam. * They cast lots and lots of direct heals on the tank. This can be ok, as obviously you can't let the tank die and direct heals heal the tank for more than a Beacon heal would. However, Paladin heals are strongest when you don't directly heal your Beacons. Obviously, you can't let the tank die either, so you have to use your judgement, but it's definitely something to be aware of. In a raid with two Holy Paladins, though, you should be able to let Beacon do most of the heavy lifting, and instead spot heal the raid to get the maximum benefit out of your Beacons. I personally love healing with another Holy Paladin, as I basically never have to heal the tank directly and my HPS skyrockets! * Gloria died, but never used a Healing Tonic or Lay on Hands. Basically, that should never really happen.
