Weekly WAMC / School Lists Thread - Week of February 03, 2019

Hey y'all, I'm currently a senior in undergrad (studying biology and bioethics) looking to craft my school list. Definitely want to focus more on humanitarian schools than research schools (I just don't really have a passion for research). I feel like my EMT experience and academic interests lend themselves better to service (also this is what I truly have a passion for). I'm looking for help crafting my school list.

  • Year in school: senior
  • Country/state of residence: Virginia
  • Demographics: white female
  • Schools to which you are applying: In state publics (VCU, UVA, EVMS), Pitt, Georgetown, George Washington, Baylor, Keck, help me figure this out!!
  • Cumulative GPA: 3.88
  • Science GPA: 3.8
  • MCAT Scores: 523 (131/132/130/130)
  • Research – include any abstracts/posters/publications and how you were credited (eg. First author, senior author, etc): 300 hrs clinical research in a psychiatry lab. No papers or posters, but I am getting a LOR from the PI.
  • Volunteering (clinical) – include hours/sites: 2000+ hours as a volly EMT (I'm also a field preceptor and part of clinical review team), 100 hrs desk job at Free Clinic (should I even include this?)
  • Physician shadowing – include hours/specialties: 12 hrs peds, 40 hrs allergy/immunology, 12 hrs ER, 12 hours gen surg.
  • Non-clinical volunteering: ~100 hours various (Boys & Girls club, food bank, homeless shelter), working on beefing these up.
  • Extracurricular activities: Student theatre (both performing and leadership positions in club), TA'd biochemistry and an introduction to U.S. healthcare class.
  • Employment history: Work for my school's career center as a student pre-health adviser, taking a bridge year to be a clinical assistant/scribe at a derm office.
  • Immediate family members in medicine? (y/n): N. I'd be the first one in my family to do anything medicine related.
  • Specialty of interest: ER, derm? I don't know. Sort of waiting for rotations.
  • Interest in rural health (y/n): Y potentially.

Any commentary on how to improve my application and what schools I should focus on would be extremely appreciated. Thank you <3
