Weezer’s “Africa” Cover Goes Top 100, Their First Hit This Decade

Except when they were underrated.

Pinkerton was highly underrated at the time of it's release and it just about ruined Rivers mentally. There's stories of him painting his walls black and insulating his windows to not allow any sun. It wasn't really until Pinkerton became a cult hit years later that people appreciated it. So when the Green album came out people were kind of meh on it but it was a hit. Rivers bled his soul in the dark for that album. After the Green album I think it kind of was this weird situation where Rivers could have made more great music but was afraid of putting it out there and facing another Pinkerton situation isolating himself and feeling bad about everything. In my opinion the Green album marks the last of classic weezer for awhile. Then Weezer just sounds a bit more dated than it should.

Rivers is an amazing musician and a great lyricist. There's no reason he couldn't be doing better. I think Weezer fans are waiting for him to kick the funk. Personally I think the White Album showed a lot of promise. It has music I wanted to listen to over and over again on it at least.
