Is it Weird That:

I used to have a hobby of discussing religion with strangers on Omegle. I would ask questions like, "What is the significance of [religious custom]? What is the most important concept to understand about your religion? Were you always very actively involved in your religious community? What religious beliefs do your family members hold?"

My favorite people to chat with were Catholics. I would say things like, "Catholicism is one of my favorite religions. It has an amazing collection of historical art, architecture, fascinating stories about miracle workers and saints. I watched a TV show about some girls who wanted to become Sisters—do you know anything about that? Did you go to Catholic school? Did you like Catholic school? What is the significance of the rosary?"

I didn't say anything about Buddhism unless they asked, besides comments like, "We have a similar belief in Buddhism." Some questioned if I wanted to convert to their religion, since I seemed to be so interested. Then I would say a bit about emptiness vs. eternalism, and they appreciated the learning experience. Once in a blue moon a person would try to convert me. I'd respond with, "Thanks, but no thanks."

I met a former Buddhist who believed that the prophet Mohammed is Maitreya Buddha, because they both... start with M? And both promote compassion? Something like that. I disagreed with him, and then the conversation moved on to other topics. There was another guy who claimed Buddhists practice human sacrifice—I thought he was hilarious!

I didn't have any conflicts with these people. So, I think your conflicts stem from the fact that either you are instigating conflicts, or the other person is instigating them and you go along with it.
