I was wondering general thoughts in Sweden about the Julian Assange case. Is it a well known story in Sweden? Or is no one really interested?

Very well known, since one of the women accusing him was very well connected in the media and her friends orchestrated a campaign to drum up massive attention and paint him as a rapist.

Regarding the actual case my opinion is that at the very least he appears to be, in the words of Dave Lister, a complete smeghead. I'm sceptical that he commited rape in a legal sense, and certainly not in a moral sense, but quite possibly some sort of lesser sexual crime. Exposing someone to pregnancy and or disease without consent, which seems clear that he did, is very much not acceptable in any sense.

I don't put much stock in a conspiracy theories, if anything it seems he was a target of opportunity of the more sort of nutty radical feminism that is fairly influential in the Swedish justice system. Which then escalated into a battle of personal prestige on both sides making reasonable compromise very difficult.

The prosecutor that is the driving force behind the case is known to have argued for looking up men accused of domestic violence indefinitely and without trial as soon as they are accused. That's not actually going to happen, but it does show from what sort of mental framework she views things. Which is pretty consistent with how radical feminists in Sweden generally think.

In my opinion Assange is crazy for fleeing and the Swedish prosecutors crazy for pursuing the case beyond the initial hearing. Especially so since they have a duty to not prosecute unless they are sure to get a conviction which seems ridiculous at this point. The bulk of the blame lies with the prosecutors though, since the case shouldn't have been pursued to begin with and could easily have been closed by either sending someone to interview Assange in England or doing so by teleconference.

All that being said, I do believe that in a larger sense the good Assange has done with wikileaks outweighs anything he has done personally. Exposing the dirty laundry of governments is very, very important and useful.
