"Well the EU explains that." Why the EU doesn't excuse a Star Wars Film's faults.

u/RorschachtheMighty:

By now, a Star Wars fan should be familiar with someone trying to explain away the faults of the films with the vast ocean of extended materials of the Star Wars franchise. The most common of offenders are those who defend the quality of the Prequel trilogy, but that is another discussion in and of itself.

At the end of the day, a film will be judged as it is; purely as it appears in theaters. Yet so many seem determined to dub the films of the franchise as untouchable and infallible due to content in the EU. For the average moviegoer or casual fan, referencing the vast expanse of the EU is like trying to explain a complex mathematical function to someone who was okay at math at best and who has a wavering interest in the subject at best. Lording details over these casual fans and movie goers is not only an unfair defense, but an illogical one.

Ask yourself honestly, would you understand even half as much as you did of what happened in Attack of the Clones if you didn't know the extended universe? In fact, as a challenge, try to explain Syfo Dias without referencing the EU. The film omits so much important detail about the universe itself that the EU became necessary to fill the massive gaping plotholes. We never meet who the disgruntled alien races who break from the Republic are, nor do we see what it was that caused their dissatisfaction, until we delve into the cartoons, books, and comics.

In short, a film cannot and will not be pardoned of its content or lack thereof based on what is beyond the silver screen, nor should they be. I realize that this is a rather random rant to appear here, but I merely wished to voice this with an audience that may appreciate these thoughts.
