Went camping in Texas last weekend, woke up to this...

Just as I stated. You can camp anywhere below the permanent vegetation line and this includes sand bars. You will never have a problem finding a legal place to camp along the Brazos. I have never had property owner's bother me or pay me any mind.

Most people near DFW will put-in just below the Possum Kingdom Dam and canoe down to Rochelle's Rentals. It's a short weekend trip. And you can go further. You just have to plan where you will get out because the area is rural with large ranches and you don't want to trespass to get to a road.

Rochelle's offers canoe and kayak rentals and they will drop you off. You can also camp and fish on their property for a fee. I have my own gear but I pay them to drop me off and let me park my vehicle on their property. When I arrive at the rt. 4 bridge, I just pull my truck down to the river pack up and head home. No fuss.

When I want to go on longer trips, I just have someone drop me off and then I get out further down the river where a bridge crosses the river that has access to the river next to it. I will call on my cell phone and have someone pick me up or pre-arrange a pick-up.

You can canoe and kayak any portion of the Brazos without limitation except, of course, just below the spillway of any damn.

The generators at the PK damn burned up 5 years ago, so they don't open up the high-flow gates any more. This keeps the water in the river a little lower. I would try the 20 mile trip from PK to Rochelles as the water is deeper and the fishing good, and the views scenic. Below Rochelle's in the summer the water can get to low if you are in a canoe. There is very good striper action below PK and good cat-fishing too. And I have had occasion to pull a 5 pound large mouth out of that stretch as well. So bring a pole. Rochelle's sells bait.

Check out the South West Paddler's take on the different sections of the river for another point of view.
