Went to throw away a bag of oranges on the counter and this came out

You’re right, microscopy would be the only way to determine 100% the species, and it may be incorrect of me to assume fumigatus from an image. Fumigatus is one of the most common species we grow at work, so we’ve ID’d a lot of it and it’s growth is fairly distinctive, hence my confidence on naming this one. But I shall edit it out of my comment.

However, generally most species of Aspergillus can cause serious illness, not just fumigatus. So it would be incorrect to single out just fumigatus as having gnarly health implications. If you’re immune system and lungs are working okay and you’re not heavily exposed to tonnes of spores, you’ll generally be okay. There are exceptions and certain situations where healthy people have gotten sick, but this is very, very rare.
