Were real time strategy games really always a niche genre?

right, games like SC and Red Alert peaked back then and frankly aren't coming back any time soon.

but to OP's original question i'm not sure niche is the right term for strategy, back then or even now. it's definitely not as popular of a genre as something like Call of Duty or Fortnight, but RTS and strategy games have always had a moderate to solid following. these days it has either evolved or the audience has shifted to something more like Civ or Sterllaris (4x) style games. i know my APM isn't as high as it used to be in my teenage years and i dont particularly enjoy online play for competitive SC either. A game of stellaris checks a lot of the same boxes as SC without the stress.

and then games like total war series, warhammer, age of empires 4, homeworld: deserts of kharak, dune:spice wars, etc have been released in the last 5-7ish years and continue to thrive as some blend of "old school" RTS and strategy genre.
