'We're told to be grateful we even have readers': pirated ebooks threaten the future of book series

But if money doesn't flow back to the publisher, then the author will face a harder time publishing more.

Wow. Step back and really look at what you just wrote.

Without you, the writer, there is no product. Yet you think you have no ability, no career, no option or chance to tell stories and sell books without a middleman who takes 90%+ of the revenue and keeps it from you.

Publishers need writers, not the other way around. But so many would-be writers and even actual writers are convinced that they have no power and no chance without giving up everything except a few pennies per dollar just so they "have the opportunity to write."

What job did you do before you became a writer? Would you do that job without fair pay? There are even people who do jobs they genuinely care about passionately, that they have a personal and strong connection to. People who work with the environment or help others or something. Would you guide hikers on trails or tend to the sick or whatever that non-writing passion is for pennies on the dollar? I'll bet not.

Yet you've let the publishers convince you there's no chance and no option except to give up all the money to them.
